Company in the Dark

It's this time of day that
you find
me near you
whispering in your ear like
some phantom
in the distance
and i can be sure
you feel it
when the wind becomes cold and
all your old defenses fail you.
(They fail me, too,
when you come near.)
It doesn't take much
for rain to come
these days when
I'm supposed to be stronger,
when we've gone longer than before without
touching
without
talking
but i know you still hear my voice
at this time of day
when everyone else is away
and our shadows fall into each other
bump
into each other
when there's no one in between to stop it
and i find you in the old places
when all the other faces fade and
it's
just
you and me
and your arm is around my heart
and you smile and tell me something that
should mean nothing but
It means
everything
to me
at this time of day,
when daylight fades,
and those words remain
to cover me
until i find you
right where you were
when i went away and left you with
my heart to keep you
company in the dark.
